Finance fundamentals, explained by a practitioner
We sat down with a veteran CFO to turn financial literacy into a six-step evening course.
Financial fluency sounds intimidating until someone patient walks you through it. Our correspondent spent an afternoon with a CFO of twenty years and distilled the session into six steps you can work through with nothing but a notebook.
Read statements like stories
A balance sheet tells you what a company owns and owes; an income statement tells you what happened this chapter. Read them in that order and the numbers stop being abstract. Our expert suggests starting with a company you love as a customer.
Separate price from value
Markets shout prices all day; value whispers. The expert test is simple: could you explain, in two sentences, why this asset earns money? If not, you are speculating, not investing — which is fine, as long as you know which one you are doing.
Read the statements like stories, and the numbers will stop being abstract.
Protect the downside first
Emergency fund, insurance, diversification — the unglamorous trio. Every expert we interview repeats the same order: survive first, then grow. Returns matter only if you are still in the game to collect them.
